OWLs in Flight: Online Writing Labs for Distance Learning
نویسنده
چکیده
The online writing lab (or OWL) has emerged in the past decade as a major use of technology for the student; however, rarely does it serve the distance learner. This paper considers (1) the needs of distance learners for academic support systems, (2) the failure of these services to be extended to technology-dependent students, and (3) the advantage of technology-mediated writing tutorials over face-to-face tutorials. This topic demonstrates one instance in which technology-mediated instruction is advantageous, not compensatory, for distance students. It feeds a major concern (writing competence) in many schools as seen in remedial programs and Writing Across the Curriculum

In-flight corrections in free-flying barn owls (Tyto alba) during sound localization tasks.
Barn owls localize a stationary auditory target with high accuracy. They might also be able to hit a target that is intermittently moving while the owl is approaching. If so, there should be a critical delay before strike initiation, up to which the owl can adapt its flight path to a new stimulus position. In this study, this critical stimulus delay was determined in a three-dimensional free-fl...
متن کاملEffects of Receiving Corrective Feedback through Online Chats and Class Discussions on Iranian EFL Learners' Writing Quality
Giving corrective feedback (CF) is an essential part of the teaching and learning process, and the way it should beneficially be done has been the focus of attention for numerous researchers especially when traditional ways of CF provision are not possible, particularly in rare situations such as outbreaks of diseases. This study investigated how different ways of giving feedback; namely, throu...

This paper focuses on the impact of an asynchronous online discussion forum on the development of students’ ability in and attitudes toward writing in English. Two groups of third-year students (N = 60) majoring in English were assigned to two treatment and control groups, each receiving different types of feedback. Students in the treatment group were required to participate ...
متن کاملThe Effectiveness of Simulated Electronics Laboratories for Distributed Online Learning
Can online students learn from simulated electronics labs? We previously replaced some physical labs with simulated labs in a college-level electronic circuits course. Students who used the simulated labs performed significantly better on written tests of electronic theory than the group using entirely physical labs. They were equivalent in time to complete the criterion physical lab. This stud...
